I feel like I’m a little stagnant in my current job and would like to improve my chances for a promotion. But I don’t know exactly what I could do to expand my skills and have my employer understand that I could handle more responsibility. Is it best to get additional college credits, change to another company that will give me a higher position, or hire a placement agency?

A. Many organizations will fund additional college credits. Take a year or two and get a degree specifically in project management. This is the only way to show your employer that you have the skills they might require to lead larger projects in the workplace.

B. Ask to be moved to your company’s PMO. If managers don’t like the idea of having project managers under the responsibility of a PMO, report them to the CEO. In the PMO, you will have an early look at the upcoming projects and you will be able to snatch the ones you want before anyone else has a chance.

C. Think about finding a non-profit entity of some sort that might need you to lead a project for them. Particularly if it is a larger type of endeavor than you usually do, or it allows you to do the types of things you wouldn’t have a chance to practice in your current …
