Career growth in project management and product management is evolving. According to PMI’s Maximizing Project Success research, 39% of survey respondents cited their last project was a product development project. And with product management continuing to play a larger role in project delivery, understanding how the two roles align (and where they diverge) is essential for professionals looking to stay ahead. 

In this follow-up article in the Q&A Product Management series, PMI asked its product management subject matter expert (SME) group to highlight some of the most impactful areas for career development—where project and product management intersect, and where professionals may want to chart separate growth paths. 

1. What resources or supports (e.g. mentorship, professional development, etc.) have been most influential in shaping your career trajectory? 

“In my professional journey, I had the privilege to work on projects that were harbingers of adoption of the latest technology, management processes and work methodologies. Such experience in the role of product manager prepared me for the role of project manager. In each role, mentorship of senior management was very helpful.”
