The Biggest Challenges in Preparing for the PMP Exam
As a project Management professional and PMP mentor, I believe understanding the challenges aspiring candidates face in preparing for the PMP exam is crucial to both their success and the overall evolution of the certification process.
I conducted a poll across three top project management groups on LinkedIn—the Project Management Learning Group, Project Management Certification Central, and Project Management Institute (PMI) Prep—to gauge what participants perceived as the biggest challenges in preparing for the PMO exam.
A total of 348 group members cast their votes in response to the question: What’s your biggest challenge in preparing for the PMP exam?
The options were:
- Understanding complex concepts
- Affording certification costs
- Choosing the right resources
- Managing time effectively
Here are the results:

- Managing time effectively: ππ¬π± ππΌππ²π
- Affording certification costs: π΄π¬ ππΌππ²π
- Choosing the right resources: π±π΄ ππΌππ²π
The results provide valuable insights into the most common challenges PMP candidates are facing today. Interestingly, “understanding complex concepts” and “managing time effectively" emerged as the top two challenges.
