Got KM?

Got KM? Is everyone in your organization walking around smiling, proudly sporting their KM mustache as a symbol of their commitment to the idea and to doing their part to achieving the intended business value? Or are they just paying "lip service" (pun intended) to your enterprise's goal of becoming a true "knowledge organization"?

If it's the latter, then you might need to open up your desk drawer and get out your corporate checkbook, because you're probably missing one of the key ingredients to implementing any significant organizational change: incentive!

This may come as a shock to some, but the average hard-working corporate schmo is not punching the clock every day for altruistic reasons. He/she is in it, as they say, (primarily) for the money--a paycheck (or cash equivalent). That's the first and foremost motivator.

Add to this the fact that change is hard--it's disruptive, uncomfortable and sometimes even intimidating ("Can I do this? It's not what I originally signed up for..." and "What will happen to me if I can't adapt to this change?"). Along with an appreciation that KM is actually one of the biggest and most complex types of organizational change that you can think of, you are looking at a real recipe for failure unless everyone involved is highly motivated to make the change work.

So what motivates people? Incentives! Back to my earlier …
