When the holiday season approaches, I’d like to do something to give back to my community and those who have been helpful to me all year long. Are there any things that those of us with PMP skills might do that would be appreciated and useful? I’d like to do something other than collect money while ringing a bell in front of a store, although I realize how valuable that extra income is to the organization that is receiving it.

A. If you search online, you can find any number of organizations that are looking for donations at this time of year. Even if this has been a sparce year for you for having extra cash, giving money is the only way to contribute during the holiday season that has any value in your community.

B. As a project manager, you surely know many other PMs through your organization, your work with other companies, and your local PMI chapter. Contact them and get together for a meeting. You can offer to serve as the head of the project, pool your holiday charitable contributions, and agree on a large six- to nine-month undertaking that you all will work on evenings and weekends to give back to the community.

C. Your skills in managing projects are very specific. It is not possible to use them outside the …
