Beyond the Hype: What We Learned Launching an AI Community of Practice for Project Managers
For many professionals, the true obstacle to conscious AI adoption remains moving from theoretical interest to practical application in their own work. Aware of this need, in May 2025 the PMI Northern Italy Chapter (NIC) launched an ambitious initiative: the first Community of Practice (CoP) entirely dedicated to AI.
The objective was to create a place where members could not only meet, but also collaborate, experiment, build, and share practical knowledge with the entire NIC member community. The AI-dedicated Community of Practice served as a pilot and pathfinder to collect experiences and best practices, in anticipation of launching new communities in the coming months.
In January, I was asked to coordinate the first Community of Practice on AI, and I accepted enthusiastically. I performed the role of facilitator according to servant leadership principles, listening to everyone's proposals, helping with organization, and aiming to create an environment where everyone felt like a protagonist.
After the initial phase, I focused on supporting and guiding the work of various groups, coordinating activities, and offering support during difficult moments to help them overcome any obstacles.
This article does not aim to be a simple account, but rather the sharing of the most relevant steps we learned in this journey of collaboration and innovation.
