I can hear you now. "I hate this supervisory stuff!" "If it weren't for the annoying personnel issues, we would be able to get some tasks completed on time!" "I have to manage the project, complete additional project tasks and now discipline employees who should know better. This is too much!"

When employee problems seem like they are piling up, it is natural to question your career path. You may even question the planet of your employee's upbringing. All is not lost, however. It is possible to work through individual discipline issues in a way that can be of benefit to you, the employee, the project and the company.

Why Bother?
Avoiding progressive discipline will take continued efforts, but there are significant advantages to doing so. You don't want to be involved in progressive discipline if you can help it. Some unfortunate results of mishandled progressive discipline interventions are employee resentment, resistance to your leadership, loss of credibility or simply an awkward change in relationship with other project employees. Just in case that is not motivation enough, consider the possibility of a worst case scenario involving expensive litigation (if there is any other kind), government investigations and/or workplace violence. This is not the way you wanted to see your name in the paper.
