Quick, Somebody Call Me a Doctor!
Okay, okay, you're a doctor!And flam. So you've heard that one before. If only it were that easy, but as we all know to become a doctor you first have to go to medical school, where you study biology, anatomy, psychology and a bunch of other subjects that I was never good at. Then you have to pass your licensing exams, survive residency, maybe even become board certified, etc.
But what does it take to become a "knowledge manager"? What do you need to know? What kind of education/training should you get? What experiences should you have? What kind of background qualifies you to hang that rather peculiar shingle outside your door (or cubicle)?
I was given pause to ponder this question recently when a loyal reader wrote to inquire about knowledge manager "certification" programs. I had to confess I didn't know of any. So I did a little searching.
First, I went to my trusty Yahoo home page, typed "knowledge management courses" into the search engine and, voila, I got 4,300 hits. Amazingly, the eighth hit was the following (have you ever gotten this lucky with a Web search?):
