One of the initial business models of e-commerce was the advertisement. Many companies were built around the value propositions of online advertising. Though they generated little revenue, they brought tremendous rewards to the companies in terms of equity appreciations. However, the initial tactics of banners and other static forms of advertisements could not sustain their appeal for too long, and soon their revenue generating capability decreased--mostly because users could ignore them without any problems.

So the online ad industry had to devise some other tactics. And it did.

The new tactics have been made infamous by the X10 surveillance camera. Online insurance companies employ them, as do a host of other companies including respectable names like the New York Times. A number of users think that they are nuisance, but a proportionate number of marketing professionals believe in their efficacy.

Intrusive Ads Are Becoming Mainstream
They are intrusive ads, and you may have seen some very interesting uses of them. I saw one such ad on the website of a respected online newspaper for direct marketers. In this ad, when you enter the website you would see a spider drop down from the top of the page, and that keeps going in a circle on your screen and slowly draws a big cobweb with a discount offer imprinted on it.
