Think Strategically, But What About the Daily Fires I Have to Put Out? (Part 2)

In the previous article, we addressed process awareness and alignment. Every day it is the little stuff that brings us trouble. Daily, the proverbial fires flare up--the unexpected deadlines arise, we field telephone calls from an irate client, or a memo arrives informing of a change that will happen tomorrow.

A key reason for these fires flaring up has to do with lack of awareness of organizational processes and alignment of these processes to organizational objectives. Raising the awareness of organizational processes and how their desired outcomes align to business goals can synergize teams toward a common purpose. In the previous article, we discussed how we can do this by identifying the key processes in our organization and their outputs and how they contribute to business goals.

In this article, we will discuss the next steps of raising awareness of organizational processes and alignment of these processes in your organization. We start our by asking these questions:  

  • What processes are you working with or own?
  • Are these processes in alignment with my organization's Vision, Mission, Business Objective or Strategies?
  • Are the processes in your company baselined and executed in the same way by all knowledge workers?
  • What are the measures of effectiveness for these processes?
  • Is it time to focus on process improvement?
