Methodology: Cure-All or Curse?
It may not have the sex-appeal of a juicy accounting scandal, but methodology has generated a lot of buzz over the last few years. A simple Google search on "project management methodology" generatesĀ more thanĀ 11,000 results. Processes, templates and systems abound--each with a slightly different twist. But is methodology really all it's cracked up to be? Yes and no...
The underlying concepts are hard to dispute. Regardless of the flavor, methodology can bring order and focus to a project, creating a logical path from beginning to middle to end. By providing a framework of repeatable steps, methodologies minimize re-invention and increase the consistency of solution quality across projects. Other benefits can include:

Increased likelihood of completing projects on time and within budget

More efficient and consistent application of resources

Better level-setting of expectations among stakeholders, team-members, clients and vendors

Improved problem handling (e.g., providing documentation to solve disputes)
Critics make some sound arguments as well. For example, team-members may feel that a methodology imposes too much structure--inhibiting creativity and obstructing good problem-solving.
