The Data Warehouse in Production: Life After Implementation
The emphasis in most data warehousing methodologies has been on design and development. There is a plethora of material available that can guide teams in the architecture, data design and development process of the data warehouse. However, little thought is given to enhancing the warehouse after production. Few methodologies give thought to the process of constantly improving the implemented warehouse and maintaining the highest degree of excellence. In general, IT views the implementation as the end goal; unfortunately, data warehousing--like manufacturing--is a process that must be continually refined.
There are several areas that should clearly be given significant importance after production. All of these areas would be given proper treatment during the initial warehouse development if a clear process was followed. But in reality, these items are usually missed.
One of the key items that is always missed during the initial warehouse implementation is a metadata repository. Most teams will usually capture metadata as part of the data model, ETL tool or end-user tool. But in most cases, an integrated metadata repository is neglected. Most teams simply do not know what to do with this. A great resource for plotting an integrated metadata strategy is Building and Managing the Meta Data Repository by David Marco. A post-production project could focus
