Technology can play funny games with our minds. We can get so wrapped up in our day-to-day activities of building fancy dandy ebXML B2B limited ontology for service order processing at the latest Java bean factory, that we forget to take time to pause and think about why we do all this stuff.. I am working on the client interface architecture for a major telecom carrier, and one of my colleagues came to me and asked me something that gave me reason to stop and smell the roses. It seems that one of his teenage sons has an obsessive and compulsive fascination with a popular Internet-distributed game (must be the only one!)

 

Of course, as fate would have it, the teenager was told by his father to disconnect from the keyboard and join the rest of the family for mundane events like dinner and grandma's visit. Under duress, the teenage son reluctantly left his life-blood connection and joined the family for some idle chitchat (remember those days when we used to do that ourselves?). Of course during the course of the chitchat session the son, wanting to embarrass Daddy for interrupting his only source of enjoyment, asked his dad to explain just why the game was so fascinating and how it actually worked. My colleague gave some vague answers and promised to get back to him with the answer. The next day he came to my cube and asked me to return a favor …
