What Stuff Is the Right Stuff?
Who are these ideal project managers, who exemplify all the characteristics of a proverbial hero? Possessing boundless energy and more than willing to use it working hard for something in which they believe.  Focused on the big picture, with acute attention to detail. Experts technically, while possessing a keen awareness of business reasons behind the direction. Charismatic personalities driven to work long hours--sometimes without time spent on personal family and social interaction. Willing to make sacrifices for members of their team when the need arises. Who are these people and what is the "stuff" of which they are made?

The Classic Traits
When I look for a project manager to fill a consulting assignment, there are specific traits that I seek. First and foremost, I look for leadership capabilities.  At the end of the day, this person has to convince a highly intelligent and diverse set of personalities to accomplish many tasks that are difficult to understand and seemingly impossible to achieve. They need to make tough decisions and convince their client of the need for those decisions. They need to “manage upwards,” instilling in senior management confidence in their ability to complete the project on time and without exceeding allocated funds.
