Today we're going to cover the basic areas of frequent discrimination. Check and double check before implementing your interview guide to avoid these areas. Remember, if it is not included in the job description, the subject is not relevant. This is a business discussion and any topic falling out of those boundaries during the conversation can open you up to serious litigation. That being the case, let’s review some of the areas of discrimination you need to avoid.

Listed below are the major areas of discrimination. Be aware that the applicant may bring some of these areas of discrimination up themselves. If that is the case, state clearly that the information they just volunteered is not relevant to the position. This can be especially important in today’s job market, when I have seen a trend with many candidates “volunteering” information that is not only irrelevant, but also inappropriate. I believe they are operating under the misconception that they are helping their cause by freely volunteering this information. Therefore, by simply stating the fact that it is not relevant you are keeping your questioning in line with the law and uniform for every candidate.
