| Part 2 of 2. Read Part 1 of Organizational Climate: Your Project Can Have It Made in the Shade. |
Organizational climate--based on corporate culture, supervisory skills, history, business processes, management direction, communication channels, employee morale and so on--does not change rapidly. It usually takes months, even years to change. Still, you, as a leader, must have a clear understanding of that climate in order to properly plan projects and communicate to the organization.
There are several steps to properly gauging the current organizational climate, but none of them takes very long. You will need to document your personal assessment and then get complementary/confirming views from other sources. This will give you the "big picture" necessary to lead effectively.
Data Gathering: Personal Free Association
The first step in data gathering is to document your own instincts. The way to do this is to choose a quiet place and write down quickly--without pausing to judge--words or phrases that describe your organization. Your comments should be emotive, emphasizing how you feel. Write major influences larger or bolder. Your comments might include phrases such as these:
- too much change
- management vs. employees
- on the right track
- lost focus
- employees valued
- don't know what's going on anymore
- supportive
