Managing a data warehouse project is not something to be taken lightly. These projects are generally large, important and represent all kinds of investment--time, money, resources--and high stakes. So it's important to be at the top of your PM game when you knuckle down to tackle a DW project.

Of course, project management is essential for any IT or business endeavor, regardless of the type, size or exposure. On its surface, it acts to ensure delivery on time and within budget, but project management also helps in setting expectations, monitoring progress and maintaining team enthusiasm and morale. Likewise, good project control requires more than just a high-level project plan, you also need many tools that are to be used consistently during the project:

  • Project schedule (tasks, estimates, dates, resources)
  • Change control and issues management
  • Weekly status reportsĀ 
  • Project directory
  • Resource plan
  • Communication plan
  • Statement of work (or project charter)
  • Risk control plan
  • Peer reviews
  • Milestone Matrix
