Book Review: Managing Einsteins

They are referred to as "Einsteins" because they are frighteningly smart. They are so bright that they intimidate many project managers. But, these managers do not dare alienate them because they are afraid these geniuses will walk out and get another job.

 

A horrendous job market does not impact these idiot savant oddballs' ability to snare new jobs, either. However, citing and dealing with super-brains is not a new issue. The ongoing question-- according to John M. Ivancevich and Thomas N. Duening, authors of Managing Einsteins: Leading High-Tech Workers in the Digital Age (McGraw-Hill; $24.95)--is, how do you do it diplomatically and politically so high-powered manpower doesn't up and leave?

       

Einstein or Geek: What's the Difference?

There is little difference between an Einstein and a geek. They're both super smart and possess powers that awe project managers. Website whatis.com defines geeks as follows: "In computers and the Internet, a geek is a person who is inordinately dedicated to and involved with technology to the point of sometimes not appearing to be normal."

 

Although I disagree, the authors contend that Einsteins are not geeks. According to them, the "Einsteins of the world are vital to the functioning of technology."
