What Stakeholders Want: The Employees

Here we are in week three of our exploration of “What Stakeholders Want.”  If you missed the last two segments, you can find them in the Principles and Philosophies channel.  So far we have discussed what customers and owners want as stakeholders of an organization.  This week we will delve into the world of employee expectations.

So, what do employees want from the organizations they serve?  Given the level of employee dissatisfaction out there in corporate-land, you would think it to be a mystery.  I submit to you that employees of all shapes and sizes want the following:

  1. Fair compensation
  2. Respect for their person and their views
  3. Opportunities for growth and advancement
  4. Belonging to a winning team

Let’s take these in the order listed.  

Fair compensation is more than just a wage; it is the entire package that an employee exchanges for their most precious assets– time and creativity.  Employees want to know that this compensation is comparable to others within the organization and other similar organizations.  They want to know that management is diligent in their efforts to ensure that compensation is fair all the time.  To this end, they have little respect for …
