Technology is the Answer! Now What Was the Question Again?
Every time I look at an IT industry publication, news magazine or even the technical section of newspapers, I see lots of advertisements and articles about new vendor Frameworks and design and development tools to generate JAVA, J2EE, XML, SOAP, etc.
All of these products are focused on their ability to create highly functional and high performance Web services. Recently, there has been even more discussion about WebTop packages to enhance the capabilities of pure browser-based front ends and to facilitate a look and feel closer to that of native windows applications.
There is a plethora of choices out there and many companies are taking a hard look at these newer Web service-based architectures and technologies to address deployment, performance and interoperability needs. However, many of these technology decisions are made well downstream from the business and, in some cases, downstream from application design and development.
This minimizes their effectiveness and in many cases causes expensive IT initiatives to fail, be delayed or cancelled. This is often caused because of poor communication between the business owners and IT management, and an incomplete understanding of what the business will need from IT so that proper quality of service (QoS), functional and performance requirements can be developed.
