The Top Ten Reasons Projects Fail (Part 3)
A lively discussion thread is ongoing. Since the first article in this series was posted last November, we've had a pretty lively discussion in the Project Management Central discussion board. Thanks to all participants and readers for your contribution to this.
One theme has been to avoid placing blame solely on project managers. Another theme has been the importance of goal setting and change management. Some postings supported the top 10 list, while others contributed a list of their own. We probably could compile a top 30 list at this point.
In defending PMs, several people commented that it was a lack of courage, involvement and commitment on the part of the senior managers and owners of projects that we should be concerned about. Also mentioned is that senior management needs to do a better job of creating a supportive and project friendly environment.
A related and apparently contradictory comment regarding project owners was that they sometimes interject new ideas continuously during the life of a project, causing a chaotic situation to exist. To make matters worse, these opinions are sometimes offered by unqualified and even uncommitted individuals causing even more chaos. In a similar vein (picking on project owners and senior management), a few posters said that very often unrealistic expectations are set, making project success unlikely.
