Sometimes it is necessary to open a brand-new project management office, or even a branch office of some type. In some cases, everything is mandated. In others, there is a wide degree of latitude and it is up to the project team to set up the site. The purpose of this article is to identify issues that need to be considered.

 

Categories

The categories set forth are fairly arbitrary and you may find the need to have more or less. The important point is that it helps to be organized so you can meet expectations. With this in mind, the six sample categories are:

  • General--how many people, starting when, how long, where, etc.
  • Facilities--cubes, offices, etc.
  • Physical Security--door locks, alarm systems, guards, etc.
  • Computing--desktops, notebooks, printers, etc.
  • Computer Security--firewalls, anti-virus, etc.
  • Telecommunications--Internet circuits, DSL, ISDN, leased lines, etc.

 

There are a staggering number of variables to consider and track. To assist, a sample Excel template accompanies this article that you can customize for your own needs.
