'Portal-izing' Your Project Management Tools

Meeting with a client, I was presented with the following scenario:

 

They had made a committed investment in an enterprise portal, along with already having deployed a variety of project management and collaborative tools that were in heavy use throughout their IT organization. They wanted to know, "How do we implement our current PM tools into a portal, while still taking advantage of the out-of-box collaboration provided by typical portal products?" The question asked was: "How do we 'Portal-ize' our PMO?"

 

The portal market is a rapidly changing landscape. Many giants from the application server market are staking their claim as leaders in the enterprise portal arena (IBM, Sun, BEA, etc.). ERP vendors such as SAP and PeopleSoft have released portals that serve as intranets sitting on top of their core application stack, and many of the pure-play portal vendors are being bought, merged or repositioned. The market has started to move away from the term "portal" to "Enterprise Web Application" due to these systems encompassing not just portal frameworks, but content management, document management, business process and more in their core solutions.

 

For example, Plumtree is now positioning its portal as "The Enterprise Web" while Vignette's recent acquisition of the Epicentric portal (being packaged as "Vignette Application Portal") has brought together a market leader…
