Projectizing the Offshore Model

It's nice to know whether or not your company has adopted the goal of pursuing an offshore model for the projects in the coming year. If your company has this as a goal, then you're way ahead of the game. However, if your project is the first to initiative such an undertaking, then you're headed for a lengthy project plan (with a large Risk Plan) and very little in the way of know-how to mitigate these risks.

 

Companies often choose to pursue an offshore model to obtain specialized analysis and development work, and at a cheaper rate than the resources within their own company (onshore). Whether your company is deciding on this model or whether your project is first to spearhead obtaining resources from across the globe, you'll want to have these objectives in mind:

 

  • Develop percentage of work to be done by offshore vs. onshore resources
  • Set acceptance criteria for offshore companies
  • Obtain an Offshore Champion
  • Communicate the Change

Percentage of Staffing

Chances are, your company has it's own set of analysts, developers, testers, etc. to help with the workload on any given project. It can be difficult to know what resources you're asked to go after on a project if you don't know what the expectation is from management. It is the job of the management team to decide what percent of offshore resource should accompany onshore resources.…
