The Whole Truth and Nothing but the Truth

We have all seen the back of the application where it talks about a signature verifying that everything you write on your application is the truth. Seems painless enough. It is a binding contract of sorts. Don’t lie on your application, and there will be no problem. Why then do I still have applicants who claim that they were employed by a company (even supplying dates) only to find out that they never worked there? In reality the candidate contracted to that company through a vendor of some sort. Oh, yes, I have heard all the stories. Everything from the candidate claiming that they didn’t understand what “employment” meant. They worked on-site and so they felt like that company employed them. What? Can this person be serious? Is there truly a state of mind wherein you are in such a fantasy that you believe you are employed for a company when you are a contractor or temp? There must be, because it has been occurring frequently by a high percentage of applicants who are visiting this fantasyland and trying to take me with them!

Here’s a clue: Whoever cuts your check is your employer! And, no, if you are self-employed then the client who signs your check is not your employer, but a client. Honestly, it scares me to think that there is confusion on this subject. Now, I know very well there is no one in my community of …
