A focused project portfolio represents an organization's prioritized view of all projects and programs critical to the successful mission of the enterprise. An example might be where a firm provides education and training products and services. A portfolio for this firm would identify and prioritize projects dealing with the implementation of courseware that automates course content development. This set of projects is focused upon the core business mission and key strategies of the education and training organization.

 

Probably one of the most important steps toward mastering the building of a project portfolio for any enterprise is using functional knowledge contained within the organization itself. This was especially true during the Year 2000 conversion. Corporate and government agencies world-wide needed to call upon experienced legacy application development personnel most familiar with the organizations information systems infrastructure. Application systems developed years earlier needed to be analyzed for potential date errors associated with millennium change. Technical and user department staff who had been with the firm or knew that type of business were most qualified to ferret out the potential date errors and correct them before they occurred.
