Every hiring manager knows that aside from solid technical skills, the key element in hiring a successful PM is to identify a person who possesses the skills of any great organizer, presenter and motivator. Someone with the skills to inform, persuade and convince the team, colleagues or clients by means of presentations of facts and material. Given this fact, there are seven key factors that we focus on when hiring project managers.
Been there, done that, so why didn't I get the job?
The number one reason that people are turned down for interviews boils down to communication skills. I know that I have told people they were not chosen for the job because they simply did not have the experience or level of communication needed as a project manager in that particular company culture. However, was it that they did not possess all of these qualifications or was it that they did not illustrate that they possessed all of these qualifications during the interview?
One of the most rudimentary qualifications of a successful project manager is to possess strong communication skills. In turn, it is logical to say that successful communicators are highly organized and in fact their high level of organization is achieved my being fluent on the subject and prepared material.
