Whether you want to switch industries or are forced to by layoff, here are tips on preparing to enter a new project world.

Before You Jump

1. Network:   "You are going to invade a foreign territory, so network with locals who know the land and learn as much from them as you can," says Vincent Alcalde of Interpacific Data Management Limited in Hong Kong. Join industry associations, consult Web sites and call professional contacts.

 

2. Revamp your resume:   If a potential employer can't see the connection, you probably won't get an interview. So make sure you've got any and all relevant experience listed, including volunteer work or coursework.

 

3. Consider interim steps: Pursue something that's not dramatically different than your previous job. "You can't go in one jump from software to construction," says Adrienne Keane of Cisco Systems in  Irvine, Calif. "Think about what types of positions you need in between."

 

After You Land

1. Accept the learning curve:   It will take some time to find your legs. "You may be very uncomfortable moving into a new area, but you will grow," Keane says.

 

2. Exploit strengths, manage weaknesses:   Focus on doing what you do well, and don't be afraid to ask others for help with the rest until you're more comfortable.
