An accelerated project launch requires a mandate, preparation and attitude.
Although it was first applied to failing projects that needed to get back on track in a hurry, accelerated project management has since become the way to launch a variety of projects in today's fast-paced, efficiency-driven business environment.
The accelerated methodology allows project teams to come to consensus quickly on customer requirements, scope, schedules and budgets in a simple and reliable manner, according to Michelle LaBrosse, PMP, author of Accelerated Project Management (HNB Publishing; 2002).
But accelerated project management requires the right mix of roles, preparation and attitudes. To get a project off to a roaring start, three positions are critical, LaBrosse says.
1. Sponsor. Provides a clear mandate for the project, including resource approval. "If you proceed without the mandate, you are wasting your time."
2. Launch Facilitator. Implements the pre-event preparation, leads the launch session and guides the team through accelerated techniques. "There is a significant payback for adequately preparing for a project launch session. [It allows] the team to focus on creating realistic project plans, schedules and budgets."
3. Team Members. Bring a can-do attitude
