The next stage in PMO maturity may be the role of 'corporate brain.'
As organizations implement project management offices to improve project delivery and support, a growing number are also exploring a next stage in PMO maturity-the enterprise management office (EMO).
"The next logical step is to provide business management services, not just project management support," says Michael Salvagno, project manager for IntelliNet Corp. in Cleveland. "The EMO is a centralized management service center that provides managers and executives with timely and accurate reporting, business information analysis and updated processes to enable them to efficiently run their business units. Think of it as a 'corporate brain.'"
To be effective, EMO implementations must be a collaborative effort, underpinned by a common desire to increase efficiencies, share knowledge and develop intracompany relationships, Salvagno says. Before getting started, he says, companies should do some upfront work:
1. Study the corporate structure. "Understand how the business is organized and how information and knowledge flow throughout the company. Look not only at the org chart, but the informal business relationships and how things get done," Salvagno says.
