Getting Pervasive
The era of pervasive computing has come upon us. The term pervasive computing refers to a world where wireless networks, voice recognition, Internet capability and artificial intelligence have been integrated into miniaturized components to provide advanced, interconnected applications within any electronic system.
A rudimentary example of pervasive computing is the Handspring Treo cell phone/PDA/digital camera. This single device can act as a cell phone, personal organizer and digital camera. Additionally, it is connected to the Internet, allowing you to send and receive e-mail on it as well as surf the Web. The whole pervasive concept is that a single device can do more and connect ubiquitously with other devices.
While the current Treo is still user driven, more advanced pervasive devices will be personalized to the user and recognize environmental context. For example, based upon your favorite sites, a more advanced Treo may configure itself to create a portal with those links to be easily accessible. Additionally, the Treo will recognize environmental factors such as lighting and automatically adjust its contrast as necessary. The whole pervasive concept is based upon the premise that the device will react to the context within which it operates and automatically act with the best possible response. This is quite a powerful paradigm which will
