Project Exhumation: Activate Those Project Zombies (Part 3 of 3)
You have now followed three steps out of four to turn the many zombies lurking in your workforce into effectively participating champions of participation. The next and final step is to show that you are practicing what you have preached. Don't slump back into silence or non-action, because the old unproductive culture is still undead and will take over again.
Step 4: Maintain Momentum
At this point you are out of gantthead's Activation stage and in the Control stage.
Get Quick Hits Early.Show by your actions right from the start that you intend to work the action plan. Your actions will be better than hours of speeches and pages of e-mailed messages, even better than a ritual sacrifice. Ask for assistance when you begin to work on items from the action plan. Even better: Delegate tasks from the action plan to experienced high-performers, who want to do more to show their value.
Example: If a root cause of schedule problems was identified as a lack of cooperation by another department, have your team meet with the other departmental representatives early on in the project. Positively and constructively clarify expectations for the project in progress.
