A new report by Cutter Consortium argues for redefining IT governance in broader terms. Here, the author outlines the case and offers 10 principles -- spanning collaboration to corporate culture -- that are crucial to success.

IT governance is real, unavoidable and political. Increasingly, it's stimulated by regulatory changes. To some, it defines corporate culture. Others only think about governance as being applicable to back-office processes. The approach to governance that I'm taking here is broader than most definitions you'll find. In fact, I'm actually making an argument for the concept of governance to change dramatically, for us to treat governance as a way to manage internal and external priorities through the application of a set of governance best practices.

Technology professionals are simultaneously creating and satisfying more governance requirements. There are tons of technology acquisition, deployment and support issues — especially as the business models that technology supports become more collaborative and more integrated with customers, suppliers, partners and even employees. As the government creates more regulations about the management of digital data, the same technology managers have to respond quickly, cost effectively, and in ways that support ongoing compliance audits. A tough assignment all around.
