IT PM Maturity
Serving as a project manager in the technology community is rewarding but definitely comes with the growing pains you experienced as an adolescent. Sprinting through the CMM process while trying to perform the balancing act of managing an IT project has been, to say the least, eye-opening. Having managed multiple projects for a company going through the CMM framework allows me to spread what I have learned as an IT PM. Get the aspirin out, and get ready for the IT PM Maturity process!
First Who, Then What!
Quoting "First Who, Then What!" from the Jim Collins book Good To Great reminds me that at the end of the day, I'm an IT PM who is still responsible for managing all of the variables of a project. But don't tell this to the management team or the sponsor of the project. Why? Simple. Because you're also responsible for complying with the CMM processes that are bestowed upon you as the leader of the project.
That's not to say your teammates shouldn't have some ownership in the CMM process. However, like every nervous IT PM who's concerned about their timeline and budget, an IT PM cares to remove any and all roadblocks from his team. Unfortunately, while speeding through the CMM phases, the processes within each phase will at times appear to be roadblocks. Here's how to help mature your skills as an IT PM as you walk through each phase.
