Get Picky
Bill Gates says his company wouldn’t be the same without them. Was he talking about vision statements? No. Values? Nope. Customers? Please!
What was he talking about? The top people he chose to lead his organization. Gates cannot imagine that his organization would have been partly as successful if he had not hired the top tier group he did. Many leaders say the same thing in different ways. It’s the people you surround yourself with that will make all the difference.
You must think the same way about your “top tier.” These leaders are the essential models, the inspiration, the catalysts for the success of your project. So what have you done to build your skills in this area? Not much if you are like many project managers, even though there are so many subtleties involved.
Here are some key points that are not covered in basic training on hiring.
Prepare
If you do nothing else, be ready with a list of special interview questions chosen to maximize your ability to find the cream of the crop for your project leaders. Questions based on classic competencies, although a good start, are not enough.
Planning/Estimating Skills
You need people who can create work plans and accurate estimates and forecasts for their areas of expertise. They need to know what to prioritize and what are
