All may not embrace the Project Management Institute's widespread influence on the profession it serves, but it is indisputable: 50,000 new members in the past two years alone, 1.5 million copies of the PMBOK in circulation, a presence in 150 countries. So what's next for PMI? CEO Greg Balestrero shares his hopes and dreams.

From five founding volunteers in 1969 to more than 140,000 members in 150 countries today, the Project Management Institute (PMI) is a success story that intertwines with the growth of the project management profession it serves. It is estimated that more than $10 trillion is spent on projects globally ever year, and a significant amount of that work is managed by PMI members, many of whom are certified PMP (Project Management Professionals).
 
More remarkably, the growth of PMI membership and the project management profession in general is actually accelerating. In the past two years, PMI added more than 50,000 new members, including a 40 percent increase in membership outside North America. And with 16 million potential practitioners worldwide, according to some surveys, the potential for continued expansion is very real indeed. Another industry survey found that while a vast majority (84 percent) of companies already employ project managers on a full-time basis, 75 percent intend to increase project manager utilization in the coming years.
