In the  first part of this article  we explored ways to keep a superior project staff with a focus on inter-team dynamics. This second and final part will focus on external dynamics such as corporate culture, politics and human resource management in matrixed and dotted-lined organizations.

 

6. Encourage professional development and growth.

This is one of my favorites on the list because where the first item talks about learning what makes each team member "tick," this one might give you the ability to unleash what they are most passionate about.

 

I struggle with this topic daily as I watch so many leaders skyrocket with their own development and growth and then plateau just when their teams or organizations need the most innovation. I would argue that feeling passionate about your work is the most powerful motivator within an organization, and so why don't we pay more attention to this one? The best you can do is to lead by example: continue your own path of education and professional discovery--be sure you are doing what you love to do.

 

You have great influence over setting the pace for your project's culture. Challenge each member to go beyond his or her comfort levels and reach for different accomplishments never before known to them, and do the same for yourself.
