A few days after our interview with Kelly Perdew , winner of The Apprentice 2, we asked Bill Rancic, the winner of the first Apprentice , the same questions via e-mail. We wanted to see if the two winners had any clear differences in approach. We found that what they valued MOST varied a bit, but the basic approach to project management was very similar. For us, it affirmed that to win the project management game, the basics alone give you a huge edge over the competition. gantthead: The Apprentice series is basically a 6-week job interview. What do you feel were the top three things that you did during the series that helped you win the job?

 

Bill Rancic: The top three things I did while on The Apprentice were to revert back to the basics. I worked hard, stayed true to myself and kept the goal in sight.

 

g: What do you feel was the single most important thing to focus on while leading projects on The Apprentice?

 

BR: Each time I was a team leader on The Apprentice, I used a different management style. It is important to adapt your style to each situation. For example, in the last task--which was running the charity golf outing--I micromanaged my team. I thought that was necessary …
