Slap the Editor! Fine Points of the Successful Big Project Newsletter (Part 3)

We continue with a section-by-section analysis of a powerful big project newsletter, digressing to horrid newsletter characteristics when necessary. This installment will be on the crucial (but rarely effectively employed) topic of recognition.

 

Recognition

A newsletter fit for lining a bird cage will be light on recognition. In the weak coverage, the treatment will seem insincere. Readers will find little to motivate them to do anything differently.

 

"A big Thank You for all your hard work on the last project phase! BTW: Don't forget to sign the card for all those who ended up in the Calm View rest home!"

 

There is already a newsletter section for spotlighting teams, which we have covered, and a section for spotlighting individuals, which we haven't. The recognition section or article should target as much of the workforce as possible, in a general way, and provide specific praise at the milestones reached or other project successes. If these events are few and far between, make a special effort to collect some data to show just how much effort is being made. Use objective standards such as number of deliverables completed rather than your impressions from walking through the office areas.

 

Include a list of all groups involved in the success. If you leave anyone out, it is a major faux paux, so it may be necessary to tear the editor away from his or her crossword…
