Information is Power?
The old adage "information is power" seems so clichéd and oversimplified. For what it's worth, I think so, too. The truth is that understanding information is power, and for those companies that master harvesting and analyzing the right information, the benefits can be significant.
The problem these days is that there is so much information out there. There is not just information from your own corporate ecosystem, but as corporate interactions blur into the landscape of suppliers, customers and agents, the potential for information overload is significant. Additionally, as sensors proliferate to monitor all types of machines, the deluge of information only heightens. As corporations have become poor stewards of information management, the data dump continues to grow and finding useful information truly becomes like finding a needle in haystack.
The time for change in information management practices is now, and organizations must develop a top-down information analysis strategy that identifies "what" it is they would like to analyze and then drive the information ecosystem to support those needs. Without a focused effort around discriminating between "what is" and "what is not" important when it comes to information, organizations will continue to invest in storing data that is seldom utilized.
