Who could have imaged that one certification or three little letters (PMP) could have divided a profession but it has. Project Management Professional (PMP) certification has become increasingly popular over the past several years within the Project Management profession. Those who have been certified as a PMP Professional will applaud its benefits. Those who continue to work in the Project Management profession without being PMP certified will continue to declare PMP certification is over rated and not an indicator that an individual is a more effective Project Manager.
When I started writing this paper I found an interesting article published by Mark Mullaly regarding PMP certification on gantthead.com titled: "Hiring Project Managers: Should PMPs Apply? He discusses the trend in many companies today of companies using PMP certification just as a screening tool for hiring a candidate. He also goes on to comment, "screening on this basis is just stupid."
I would tend to agree with Mullaly as being certified for the last three years I have seen some of the benefits of having my PMP. It has definitely helped get my foot in the door for job interviews or being considered as a potential candidate. Look at any job application and the qualification, "PMP preferred" has never been as prevalent as it is today. I have also been in the position of having to defend the benefits
