PM Community Contributes to Katrina Relief Effort

In addition to charitable contributions, individuals and organizations are donating time, tools and resources to assist flood victims, from moving people in wheelchairs at relief centers to taking students into their homes.

In the days and weeks following the Hurricane Katrina disaster, a number of project management organizations and vendors have joined relief efforts, pledging money, software and hands-on assistance to help the Gulf Coast flood victims. A sampling of the support from the project management community includes:
 
The Project Management Institute (PMI) donated $25,000 to the American Red Cross, and called on component leaders in the affected areas to pledge support and assistance. In addition, PMI noted that its soon-to-be-completed Post Disaster Rebuild Methodology and Training Project would provide meaningful guidelines to relief agencies ensuring maximization of resources and overall effectiveness in responding to natural disasters in the future.
 
Employees at enterprise project management solutions provider Welcom, based in Houston, spent a day at the Astrodome to assist medical personnel that were helping evacuees receive medical attention. “Many people were getting off the buses in ill health due to not having their prescription medicines or regular health procedures performed,” said Robert Blakeney, U.S. marketing manager at Welcom. “Office manager …
