Managing the complexity involved with the globally distributed systems that already exist at Amazon is a daunting task. In fact, many CTOs find it difficult to look very far beyond today when dealing with such issues. Werner Vogels, Chief Technology Officer at Amazon.com, doesn't have that luxury. With Amazon targeting a broad range of markets where competition is fierce, Werner must constantly find ways to not only streamline operations, but map out a course that defines the leading edge in distributed systems development on the web.
At seminars, in his weblog and in other venues, he has talked about "incorporating technologies based on chaos, biology and evolution principles into software to be able to guarantee robust operation at galactic scale...creating services that are able to self-organize and self-regenerate, and achieve service stability in a world that is continuously in flux."
