The chill of autumn, the leaves changing and the roar of school buses all signal September, and that it is "back to school." I believe that autumn should be "back to school" month for all of us IT professionals as well. It's time to dust of those summer beach cobwebs and do what we should be doing best--delivering projects.
Unfortunately, these days it often seems that we still struggle with the basics. Advanced portfolio management, basic concepts of project management, solution methodologies and foundational architecture all seem to elude us. Lately, I've seen so many projects fail or build non-scalar solutions that ultimately fall under high demand. If we built buildings and bridges like most of us deliver IT solutions, we would all be in trouble. So as our kids hit the books, it's time for us IT delivery professionals to hit the books and brush up on the basics of project delivery.
Lesson No. 1: We still do not apply project management properly
