The chair of PMI’s fastest growing special interest group, the IT/Telecom SIG, shares some thoughts on important trends in technology and project management, including mobility, maturity models, project management offices and agile methods.

One of the biggest industry trends discussed among IT practitioners at this year’s PMI North America Global Congress was the move from wired to wireless infrastructures at companies across North America. According to project managers in the IT and Telecommunications industries, budgets for wireless technology are growing while wired infrastructure budgets remain flat. New buildings are no longer “wired” like they had been in the past; WiFi networks are put in place in lieu of cables to each workstation.
 
Tied to this shift towards a wireless infrastructure is a move towards mobility. This is evident in the increase of laptops now coming standard with WiFi cards, and the growing popularity of devices such as the BlackBerry. Other technologies that continue to gain prominence include Voice over IP (VoIP) and radio frequency identification (RFID). Related to all these new technologies is the ever-increasing need for security to protect the network.

So how does this shift impact project managers? One could argue that these developments are “just” technology …
