Ever since I started in the field of data warehousing back in the early '90s, people have been preaching robust information management practices. However, in my assessment and travels, information continues to proliferate throughout the enterprise without proper information management.
The leaders in the field continue to talk about data quality, metadata, information models, common subject areas, information services and centralized data repositories, yet no corporation that I have been to seems to do it well. Now, the stakes are higher. As data requirements and capture for the enterprise grow exponentially, corporations can either manage that information effectively and utilize information for effective decision-making or will be completely deluged in data and live within a cloud of half-truths about their business.
I will first explore why information management efforts have failed and then explain the imperative need for proper management of information.
