Project management leads the pack of skills that are being sought in the IT marketplace, according to the 2006 Contract Workforce Report by HotGigs, a talent search engine used by thousands of companies to both search and post resource needs. The category of “project management” attracted more than 144,000 searches in the fourth quarter of 2005 — about 64 percent more searches than the second highest searched-for category of “networking” (87,000). Web developers; ERP and package software; and IT management rounded out the Top 5.
Among the reports key conclusions in the project management category:
High demand for project management skills indicates that the project backlog is breaking free. PMs are the 1st resource typically hired and will scope the project, decide the team size required, including hiring most of the team members.
Higher demand in the large and medium sized projects also indicates that the projects are substantially sized.
Projects that are 3-12 months in length were the highest demand, followed by longer-term projects (12+ months)
