During 2004, a group of 15 project leaders from a range of communities (software development, new product development) began to discuss the need for an organization to support the burgeoning interest in agile project management. What arose from these discussions was the Agile Project Leadership Network, a non-profit organization dedicated to "agile and adaptive approaches for linking people, projects and value."
 
The first task this group undertook, prior to actually forming an organization, was to develop a set of principles that would help people understand what this "agile" stuff was all about when it came to project management. These six principles are presented in the Declaration of Interdependence (DOI):
 
We are a community of project leaders that are highly successful at delivering results. To achieve these results:
  • We increase return on investment by making continuous flow of value our focus.
  • We deliver reliable results by engaging customers in frequent interactions and shared ownership.
  • Uncertainty: We expect uncertainty and manage for it through iterations, anticipation, and adaptation.
  • Individuals: We unleash creativity and innovation by recognizing that individuals are the ultimate source of value, and creating an environment where they can make a difference.
