Support, oversight and personal touches mark the success of the mentorship program at PMI's Atlanta Chapter, which has graduated more than 100 project managers in five years. Where other efforts falter or lose momentum, the Atlanta program thrives on dedication and a hallmark of project management: Making a plan and following it.

Whenever Abbie Jullien finds herself getting down or stressed out by her work in international project management, she pulls out the little note and re-reads it: "Thank you for being an inspiration in my life. Thanks for helping me grow as a project manager. At first I was a little scared … but my confidence has grown. I am truly thankful to be your friend."
 
"Her words are so moving to me," Jullien says, referring to a woman she mentored a couple of years ago as part of PMI Atlanta's mentorship program. "Being a mentor is a great feeling. It's a challenge. Sometimes it's a way to escape the project from hell for a few hours. It's wonderful to help even one person do one thing better."
 
Jullien has participated in the program since 2001, shortly after it was established, and is now its co-chair. She has been a mentor twice and someday hopes to experience mentoring from the other side, as a mentee.
