Deadlines, overbearing managers, complaints and compensating for coworkers are cited as the most common causes of stress for IT professionals.
Professionals in IT are under more stress than in any other industry, according to a new survey of more than 3,000 workers in the United Kingdom. The survey, conducted on behalf of online learning provider SkillSoft, found that an overwhelming 97 percent of people working in IT claim to find their lives at work stressful on a daily basis.
Four out of five IT consultants say they feel stressed before they even enter the workplace, in anticipation of another day juggling complaints, pressure from managers and daily targets. And a quarter of IT experts are under such enormous pressure to perform at work they have taken time off suffering with stress.
Medical professionals have the second most stressful job, followed by engineers, sales and marketing, and teachers also have demanding roles, according to the poll.
Overall, the poll found that 37 percent of workers find it difficult to meet deadlines, while 31 percent are upset about taking on other people's work. Other leading causes of work stress are workload; feeling undervalued; lack of control over the working day and long hours.
The poll revealed that a third of IT professionals say it is difficult to get the work done when managers are constantly on their backs.
